Chapter 5

Grace’s smile widened. The combination of candlelight and liquor caused her to feel fervent. The sun had disappeared beyond the horizon some time ago, and the servers no longer checked in on them as frequently as they had before. In this particular moment it was only the two of them, face-to-face, their laughter carrying up into the trees. Grace couldn’t recall ever feeling as complete as she did now. It seemed she and Donovan talked about everything and at the same time, nothing at all. She wondered if this is what it meant to ‘share your life’ with someone.

“Want to walk down to the water?”

“Sure,” she beamed.

Donovan’s suggestion couldn’t have come at a better time. It was a lovely night, and she felt like stretching her legs. This time, she removed her heels to avoid them poking into the ground. To her surprise, the breeze by the water was still comfortable, even in the black of the night.

“I don’t want to go back to Chicago,” she pouted jokingly—not jokingly. She relished in the feel of the soft grass in-between her toes, and seeing the stars so clearly was a gift in and of itself. Adding Donovan to the mix was just the icing on the cake. Extremely delicious looking icing, she might add.

“Don’t. Stay in Michigan.” He licked his lips, looking down at her. The way he said the words, it was almost as if he believed it was feasible.

Regret clouded Grace’s features, if only the idea was plausible. “You know I can’t do that.”

He reached out gently grabbing her chin and turning her to face him. “You can do whatever you want to do.” Conviction lined his words.

She turned the rest of her body, pressing ever so slightly against his. The drinks had caused her to become brazen; nonetheless, she was fully aware of her every action. More than ever she wanted him to take her into his arms. She wanted to have a reason not to resist, and the drinks gave her an excuse.

The close contact was almost too much for Donovan to bear. He gently nudged her away, even as his body craved her closeness. If she noticed his hesitation, she said nothing to acknowledge it.

“Thank you for tonight. It was really special.” She turned momentarily, looking back at the table. The lanterns were still burning bright. “I can’t believe that you went through all that trouble.”

“I’m glad you’ve enjoyed yourself so far. It wasn’t any trouble at all.”

“I have, but it’s getting late. Do you have business to take care of tomorrow?”

Even as she extended the courtesy, she prayed that he would say no. It would break her heart to have to leave now. As it stood, she felt that they could never share enough time together.

“No, tonight is all about you.” He smiled, causing his dimples to make an appearance and contentment warmed Grace through and through.

“Sounds good.”

“So what you want to do now?”

She shrugged. “Doesn’t matter to me. Whatever you want to do is fine.
